Despite the temperature being in the “real-feel” of 90 degrees or more, fall is definitely here, and with it comes those family events that we’ve all grown to love and look forward to over the years. I was especially excited to learn that the UniverSoul Circus would be making a stop in Jackson because at 30-years-old, it remains one of my fondest childhood memories to date.
I’ll never forget my Dad taking me and my sister to see the circus when it was held at the MetroCenter Mall years ago. It was my first time ever attending a real circus and from the huge tent and animals to the acrobats and clowns, I was amazed throughout the entire experience. Now that I’m a mother myself, I was set on passing that same experience on to my son and two nieces.
The Jackson leg of the UniverSoul Circus’ 25th Anniversary tour began Tuesday, September 25th and will continue until Sunday, September 30th (get your tickets here) at New Horizon Church located at the corner of Ellis Avenue and Interstate 20. Shortly before the show it began storming and we wondered what the turnout would be like with the changing weather conditions. Despite the rain and it being 7 o’clock on a school night, the parking lot was packed! In fact, we had to park in an adjacent lot even though we arrived well before the show was set to start. Honestly seeing so many people out on opening night made my anticipation for the show even more intense…I love the hustle and bustle of events as it all adds to the excitement.
We made a quick stop at the concession stand and found our seats just as the show was starting. The ringmaster did a great job of getting (and keeping) the crowd hype and the screams were deafening. There were lots of babies and toddlers there and I’d advise parents to bring some noise minimizing headphones for their little ones if they are a little sensitive to sound like our son is. Ironically, even though he was scared of the screams, he was able to fall asleep during the show after dancing his little heart out…kids, I tell ya!
One thing that anyone thinking about attending this show should keep in mind is that it’s not just for children – there is entertainment for every member of the family – and that’s why I’d say its the perfect family event to kick off the fall season. The music, the different show acts, the magic and concessions were entertaining for all of us. After the magicians made three tigers appear in previously empty boxes, Tony was trying to figure out how they did it for the rest of the night. If you’re worried about the potential of getting wet in the rain or being too hot underneath the tent, don’t. The tent was climate controlled and there was no humidity to make sitting through the show uncomfortable…and this is coming from someone who is 8 months pregnant.
If I had to choose a favorite segment of the show, it would definitely be the generational dance and music segment with Fresh the Clowns. There’s something about seeing kids sing and dance that just brightens my mood. The DJ played music that resonated with all the new dance crazes as well as the quintessential throwback, “Before I Let Go” by Frankie Beverly and Maze, that is sure to get the crowd moving. I guess this was my favorite moment in the show because of how well it captured the culture of soul and the majority Black crowd. Our culture is so distinct and special and to have a professional circus, touring the world, with acts from all over the world, showcasing that culture and being proud of it really moved me on an emotional level. I felt proud and it meant a lot for my family to see people who look just like them, as well as people who don’t, celebrate the soul that lives inside of each of us.
