For as long as I can remember, I’ve attended the Mississippi State Fair at least once every year. From the time I was a young girl up until I became a college graduate, my family has always made it a point to attend the fair together. Now that I have my own growing tribe, this was a tradition that I couldn’t wait to include my son in.
Last week, Tony and I along with our son, my Dad and my two nieces headed to the fairgrounds in anticipation of an afternoon of rides, fair foods and lots of smiles and laughs. The 159th Mississippi State Fair did not disappoint!
Navigating the fair while being 35 weeks pregnant was a challenge due to all the walking and limited seating but we mainly stayed in the Kid Zone so I was able to manage pretty well. Although our local news stations have reported that fair attendance was up by 5% from last year, for a Friday afternoon the crowd was pretty thin in my opinion. I’d rather that than bumping into someone at every turn which increases the risk of your child getting lost and having to wait in long lines for the rides and food.
We purchased the family pack of tickets and the kids rode all the rides they could handle in the two to three hour time span that we attended the fair. This trip was something I was really anticipating because not only do I enjoy the fair but it would be Marley’s first time being able to go. (Last year he was only about 6 months so we didn’t want to take him into the cool air and around the crowds.) I was excited about seeing his reaction to all the lights and colors and he seemed to be really into it all, observing everything going on around him.
I didn’t notice any new rides and because he wasn’t feeling his best, I didn’t want to overdo things (like I have a tendency to do) so we only put him on one little kiddie ride that didn’t pick up too much speed or take him in the air or anything like that. His dad rode with him, all 6 feet and 4 inches of him, in the little air balloon buggy and I’m not quite sure if Marley enjoyed it or not. You can be the judge on that.
All in all we had a really great time. I love sharing experiences with my nieces and having my Dad with us was the icing on the cake. I’m trying to imagine how things will be next year with two toddlers and I don’t know who will be more excited…me or them LOL!
